Matt Pearl Drafted By St. Louis Cardinals

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- UCLA senior outfielder Matt Pearl (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial HS) was the fifth and final Bruin selected in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft, which concluded today. Pearl was drafted in the 34th round by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pearl earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors this season after starting all 57 games. He reached base safely in all but four games, and finished his career with a .310 career batting average.
Josh Karp (1st round, 6th overall/Montreal Expos), Jon Brandt (16th round/San Diego Padres), Josh Canales (16th round/Los Angeles Dodgers) and Randall Shelley (17th round/Texas Rangers) were all selected in the first day of the draft.
Brian Baron and Eric Reece signed contracts prior to the draft. Baron signed with the Minnesota Twins on May 28th and has already started playing for the Ft. Myers Miracle, the Twins' High-A affiliate in the Florida State League. Reece signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on May 24th and will report to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League by the time their season opens on June 19th.
