Aguilera Earns Academic All-America Honors, Joins 17 ASU Track and Field Athletes on Pac-10 All-Academic Teams

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sophomore Lisa Aguilera was selected to the Verizon Academic All-America Spring Women's At-Large third-team and was one of 18 Arizona State track and field athletes to earn Pacific-10 All-Academic honors, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Aguilera, a native of Peoria, Ariz., has a 3.64 GPA in computer systems engineering and earned first-team Academic All-America honors in cross country earlier this fall. Aguilera began the track season on fire, owning the collegiate record and the world's fastest time (10:08.85) in the 3000m steeplechase for 20 days after winning the event at the Stanford Invitational March 31.

Aguilera took third in the steeplechase at the Pac-10 Championships despite a late-season knee injury. She is an athletic All-American in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.

Aguilera, also earning All-Academic second-team conference honors, was joined by 17 of her Sun Devil teammates on the Pac-10's All-Academic Track and Field teams, announced Tuesday.

Earning first-team honors on the men's side was sophomore javelin thrower Justin Owen with a 3.79 GPA in business. Sophomore distance runners Fasil Bizuneh and Jeremy Rasmussen earned second-team acclaim, with Bizuneh's 3.33 GPA in chemical engineering and Rasmussen's 3.41 GPA in computer information systems.

On the women's side, ASU senior distance standouts Mary Duerbeck and Kelly MacDonald, and junior jumper and vaulter Olivia Mazzaglia were selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic first-team. Mazzaglia, majoring in journalism, was one of five women with at least a perfect 4.0 GPA. Duerbeck has a 3.87 GPA in broadcasting, while MacDonald has a 3.63 GPA in English.

Earning honorable mention honors on the men's side were senior Marcus Brunson, senior David Burke, junior Cheyne Jones and junior Brandon Strong. Honorable mention selections on the women's side include sophomore Elizabeth Arollo, senior Jennifer Bridgeman, junior Candi Criscione, senior Arlaina Davis, redshirt freshman Jennifer Hurbis, sophomore Joni Smith and sophomore Brianna Torres. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and either be a starter or significant contributor.
