As promised, a quick update on our camps. The last two Friday nights, we had over 300 high school players on our campus competing in our 'Passing League' as well as a 'Win in the Trenches' competition for offensive and defensive linemen. This was great exposure for our staff to many of the top teams, players and coaches in the State. Plus, it was a lot of fun! We continue to be impressed with the quality of high school coaching in Arizona.
Our summer conditioning program is finishing up week #6. The players and strength coaches have really been working hard, and this will pay major dividends in the fall. One more week, and the guys will get a well-deserved week off over the July 4th holiday, then finish strong for the final four weeks leading up to Camp Tontozona.
Speaking of Camp T, I want to set the record straight. We (the coaches) are looking forward to it. The NCAA sets every school's pre-season dates based on when school starts, (August 20) and the date of the first game (September 8). An early school date, coupled with a first week bye, means that we are only allowed one week of two-a-day practices so that all teams have the same number going into the first game. So, for this year, we will have one week at Tontozona (August 12-18) followed by 3 weeks of one-a-day practices leading up to San Diego State. I hope that clears it up for everyone.
Next time, I will talk about our Mission Statement, and some of our goals for ASU Football.
