June 21, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State assistant wrestling coach Aaron Simpson and sophomore Hector Torres will compete among the nation's best at the 2001 World Team Trials, Friday June 22 through Sunday June 24, at the Cintas Center at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Simpson and Torres, representing the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club, qualified for the event with fifth place finishes in their respective weight classes at the U.S. National Freestyle Wrestling Championships, April 15 in Las Vegas. Champions from this weekend's competition will earn the opportunity to wrestle at the 2001 World Wrestling Championships, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Sept. 26-29.

Simpson, entering his fourth year as an assistant coach at ASU, claimed a 7-2 decision over former Sun Devil Markus Mollica to capture fifth place at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships and will wrestle at 187.25 pounds.

At 286 pounds, Torres earned his spot at this weekend's tournament after tying for fifth with Moe Rahmani from Cerritos (Calif.) due to a double injury default at the U.S. National Freestyle Championships.
