EUGENE - Former University of Oregon All-American Lisa (Karnopp) Nye claimed Oregon's first national title of the 2001 USA Outdoor Championships in third day action at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Near the finish of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Nye (9:49.41) outkicked national record holder Elizabeth Jackson of Nike by just over a half-second (9:49.94), as Arizona State's Kelly MacDonald followed in third (9:55.49). Nye's time was a new personal best by more than 11 seconds.
Another pair of former Duck distance greats finished top-10 in the 10,000 meters. Annette Peters ran her final race at Hayward Field and finished sixth in the 10,000 meters (32:45.12), just ahead of Milena Glusac of adidas (eighth, 33:00.64) who led much of the first third of the race. Asics runner Deena Drossin won the event (32:05.14), edging Jen Rhines of adidas (32:20.03) and Sylvia Mosqueda of Team Fila (third, 32:25.22).
In the pole vault, two-time All-American and junior Niki Reed (Newport, Ore.) recorded her highest U.S. national finish with an 11th-place effort (12-9 1/2) in the 19-woman field. World record holder Stacy Dragila won the event with a clearance of 15-1 3/4 (4.62m) - a 1/4- inch improvement over her previous track record from the Prefontaine Classic four weeks before. Alicia Warlick of the Santa Monica Track Club followed in second (14-5 1/4) Saturday, edging Mary Sauer of the Asics Track Club at the same height but with fewer misses.
In the men's javelin, recent NCAA champion and redshirt sophomore John Stiegeler (Coos Bay, Ore.) finished seventh in his first U.S. nationals appearance with a throw of 234-2 (71.37m). Unattached entrant Breaux Greer won his second straight national title, this time with a track record of 279-7 (85.23m), ahead of adidas' Tom Pukstys (244-5, 74.49m) and Eastern Illinois' Ron White (third, 238-7, 72.73m).
Junior Micah Harris (Phoenix, Ariz.) wrapped up men's duty with a sixth-place finish in his preliminary section of the 110 hurdles (13.87). During the season he clocked sub-14.0 efforts in eight of 11 appearances, including the last four of the season.
