July 5, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Oregon State men's soccer player Kurt Ness booted the winning goal for Seattle Select in its 3-2 overtime upset win over the MLS' Dallas Burn in the second round of the Lamar Hunt tournament on Wednesday, June 27 in the Cotton Bowl.
With the win, Seattle advanced to play the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS on July 11. Seattle has advanced farther than any other Premier Development League team in the history of the tournament, which is open to MLS, A-League, D-3 and PDL squads from around the country.
Also joining Ness on the Seattle squad is fellow Beaver Christian vanBlommestein, both of whom are starting defenders for OSU.
'This kind of experience is important for us as players,' Ness said of going up against some of the best competition in the world. 'It's crucial to get games like this. It's what we dream about doing.'
Ness and vanBlommestein will be back with the Beavers when they open their season on August 24 at Gonzaga.
