WSU Football Hires Robin Pflugrad As Recruiting Coordinator
July 5, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Robin Pflugrad, whose recruiting classes were nationally ranked during five of his six seasons with Arizona State, has been named Washington State's recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach head football coach Mike Price announced Thursday.
'We're extremely fortunate to be able to hire Robin,' Price said. 'He is a proven recruiter in the Pac-10 and one of the best recruiters in major college football. The recruiting system and recruiting program that he has organized is the best I've ever seen. He will make a huge impact on our Cougar football program.'
Pflugrad comes to the Palouse after spending the spring as Northern Arizona's offensive coordinator. Prior to his short stint with the Lumberjacks, Pflugrad served six years as the recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Arizona State. In addition to producing five nationally ranked recruiting classes, Pflugrad saw Arizona State players rank among the top five nationally in NFL Draft selections for the past five years.
Before joining the Sun Devil staff, Pflugrad coached the receivers and running backs for five years at the Montana. He was promoted to assistant head coach and took over the quarterbacks from 1991-94.
Prior to his work at Montana, Pflugrad spent five years at Portland State. The 42-year-old began his tenure as a graduate assistant where he began work on a master's in athletic administration. Pflugrad moved up to a part-time coach and director of football promotions before becoming a full-time assistant responsible for the wide receivers and tight ends. His final position with the Vikings included recruiting coordinator duties.
'He's won at every school he's coached at, Portland State, Montana and Arizona State,' Price said. 'He has a tremendous understanding of the passing game. Robin is an excellent on the field coach.'
A Portland State graduate, Pflugrad received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1980. The Eugene, Ore., native began his playing career at Mt. Hood Junior College. As a wide receiver, Pflugrad helped lead Mt. Hood to a 20-2 record in his two years and a No. 1 national ranking in 1977. That same year Pflugrad was an all-conference pick. After transferring to PSU, Pflugrad was a standout wide receiver for the Vikings. He was team captain and earned All-America accolades in 1979.
'I'm very excited to become a Cougar,' Pflugrad said. 'I've always had great respect for the job Washington State has done and what Mike Price has done. Pullman is the true essence of a college town, of which I'm very excited to be a part. I'm also excited to get back to the Northwest.'
Pflugrad replaces Jim Zeches who accepted a position with the San Francisco 49ers in June.
