USA Red Defeats Canada Development In Five Innings

Surrey, B.C., Canada - Amanda Freed (Cypress, CA) threw a one-hitter and gotplenty of offensive support as USA Red posted a 7-0, five-inning victoryover the Canadian Development Team Sunday night at the Canada Cup.

Freed, who needed just four pitches to retire the side in the top of thefirst inning, finished the game with four strikeouts and three walks.

Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA) and Toni Mascarenas (Garden Grove, CA) eachhad two hits for the U.S., which improved to 2-0 at the tournament.

One of Mendoza's hits was a deep home run to center to lead-off the bottomof the fifth. Mendoza's other hit was a first-inning, RBI-single through theright side of the infield that scored Natasha Watley (Irvine, CA) for thefirst run of the game. Watley started the frame by hitting a single back upthe middle of the diamond.

The Red squad added another run in the bottom of the third after StaceyNuveman (La Verne, CA) hit a double to right field and Tairia Mims (Tucson,AZ) later singled to left to plate Trena Peel (Aurora, CO), who waspinch-running for Nuveman.

An RBI-single from Lizzy Lemire (Irvine, CA) scored Mascarenas in the bottomof the fourth, pushing the U.S. advantage to 3-0.

The four-run fifth, highlighted by Mendoza's homer, put the wraps on thegame. Peel followed Mendoza with a double to left and moved to third on anerror before scoring on a single from Freed. Lindsay Gardner (Katy, TX) drewa walk, and she and Freed eventually scored the final runs of the game on ahit from Mascarenas.

The Canadian squad put together its best offensive showing in the top of thefifth, when a walk and a single started the inning. Freed was able to forcetwo groundouts before issuing another walk to load the bases, but she thenrecorded a strikeout to end the threat.

USA Red will continue action at the 2001 Canada Cup tomorrow at 1 p.m. ESTversus Venezuela.
