July 12, 2001
Indianapolis, Ind. - Atherton Communications and Pacers Sports & Entertainment, producers of the John R. Wooden Tradition presented by Andersen, announced today that the University of Missouri Tigers would play the Xavier Musketeers in the first game of the annual men's basketball doubleheader, immediately followed by the Purdue Boilermakers against Stanford University.
The Wooden Tradition doubleheader will be held at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, November 24th. The Purdue vs. Stanford game is the first meeting of the schools since the thrilling 1998 NCAA Regional Semi-Final, when the Cardinal advanced on to the Final Four. Missouri and Xavier have played once before in Indianapolis, when they met in the first round of the 1987 NCAA Tournament, which marked Xavier's first NCAA tournament victory. The teams met once again in 1988, when Missouri won a pre-season NIT game at home.
Purdue, Missouri and Xavier all return four starters and a core of talented players to their rosters. Stanford will be lead by Wooden Award finalist and 1st team All-American, Casey Jacobsen. Missouri small forward, Kareem Rush and Xavier power forward, David West are also widely expected to be pre-season All-American candidates.
Established in 2000, the John R. Wooden Tradition presented by Andersen, is an annual tribute to the legendary former coach and the excellence he personifies. Similar to the standards established by the Wooden Classic, its California-based sibling founded in 1994, the events host college basketball's elite programs. The Wooden Tradition is a celebration of the game of basketball and the activities benefit Special Olympics Indiana and Andersen's statewide education initiative. In addition to the doubleheader, this year's activities will include the Wooden Tradition Golf Tournament, to be held September 10th at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, IN and the Wooden Tradition Coaches Luncheon, on November 23rd at the Conseco Fieldhouse Entry Pavilion.
