Football Year in Review

July 25, 2001

WASHINGTON, OREGON STATE and OREGON all finished at 7-1 in league play to earn a piece of the Pac-10 championship. The Huskies earned the Pac-10's Rose Bowl berth, making UW the seventh different Pac-10 team to advance to the Rose Bowl in the last seven years. Oregon State posted its first 10-win season ever and its first piece of the Conference championship since 1964. The Pac-10 concluded a successful 2000 season with resounding New Year's Day bowl wins as WASHINGTON topped Purdue, 34-24, in the Rose Bowl presented by AT&T and OREGON STATE pounded Notre Dame, 41-9, in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. OREGON joined the party by besting Texas, 35-30, in the Culligan Holiday Bowl to give the Pac-10 three bowl wins against teams ranked in the top 15. Washington, Oregon State and Oregon all finished in the Top 10 in the final polls, the first time the Conference pulled off that feat since 1984.

CALIFORNIA punter Nick Harris re-wrote both the Pac-10 and NCAA record book for most punts in a career with 322. He also tallied the most yards on punts, gathering 13,981 during his career. Oregon State running back, Ken Simonton, tied the Pac-10 record for most season gaining 1,000 years or more.

In addition, Washington quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo was named Offensive Player of the Year. For the second consecutive time, ARIZONA STATE linebacker Adam Archuleta was named Defensive Player of the Year. Arizona State's defensive end Terrell Suggs earned Freshman of the Year honors, while Dennis Erickson of Oregon State was named Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.

California's Andre Carter was the highest draft pick of the 2000 NFL Draft from the Pac-10, selected by San Francisco in the first round, seventh-pick overall. Sun Devils Archuleta and tight end Todd Heap, were also selected in the first round. St. Louis selected Archuleta as the 20th-pick overall, while Balitimore took Heap with the 50th and final pick in the first round.
