Browner Shoots 81 In First Day Of U.S. Women's Amateur

WICHITA, Kan. - Washington State University golfer Tasha Browner (Tarzana, Calif.) shot an 81 (+10) in the first round of 101st United States Women's Amateur Championship, Monday.

The par 71 lay out at the Flint Hills National Golf Club wasn't the only obstacle Browner and the rest of the 144-player field had to contend with during the first day of competition. Weather conditions featured temperatures that topped out at 104 degrees along with 18 mph winds with gusts up to 23 mph. Under the adverse elements, only four players in the field managed to break par led by a two under effort (69) from Celeste Troche of Paraguay.

The top 64 finishers after tomorrow's second and final round of stroke play advance to match play competition, which begins Wednesday. Heading into Tuesday's action Browner is tied for 100th place, four strokes behind the 64th position.
