Men's Rowers Win Gold at Nation's Cup

July 30, 2001

The Cal men's crew was well represented at the Nation's Cup regatta (under 23 world championships) in Linz, Austria, July 27-29. In all Cal oarsmen tallied six gold and three silver medals.

In the coxless four event, returning juniors Mladen Stegic and Filip Filipic along with returning sophomore Ivan Smiljanic took the gold racing for Yugoslavia. Stegic and Filipic have won two varsity IRA Championships and are undefeated in two years at Cal. Smiljanic, also undefeated in his first season with the Bears, spent time in the varsity before winning the 2001 JV IRA National Championship.

In the men's single, Cal took gold and silver. Returning senior Nito Simonsen (Norway) held off returning sophomore Padraic Hussey (Ireland) over the last 500 meters to claim top honors. Simonsen is undefeated through three seasons at Cal and has a frosh and two varsity IRA Cahmpionships to his credit. Hussey finished his freshman campaign last June with an IRA bronze.

In the men's eight, returning senior Scott Frandsen and returning junior Neil Armour of Canada exacted a little revenge on the U.S. squad which included former Bear Jack Nunn, reversing the order of finish from qualifying to snatch the gold. Frandsen has two varsity IRA gold under his belt while Armour has notched a frosh and JV IRA gold in two seasons at Cal. Nunn finished his career with the Bears last June with his second JV IRA gold and third overall.

In the men's double event, returning junior Paul O'Sullivan teamed with former Bear John Whooley in Irsh double to finish 21st. O'Sullivan has frosh and varsity four IRA golds to his credit.
