Casey Jacobsen Named Preseason Candidate for 2001-02 Wooden Award All-American Team
Aug. 3, 2001
Los Angeles, Calif. -- Junior Casey Jacobsen and three other 2000-01 Wooden Award All-Americans head the preseason list for this year's Wooden Award All-American Team. A national poll by the John R. Wooden Award Postseason Committee decided on the 50 candidates.
Jacobsen, Jason Williams (Duke), Tayshaun Prince (Kentucky) and Frank Williams (Illinois) are last year's Wooden All-Americans who return to the list this season. Five other nominees are from the Pac-10: Jason Gardner (Arizona), Jason Kapono (UCLA), Dan Gadzuric (UCLA), David Bluthenthal (USC) and Sam Clancy (USC).
Last season, Jacobsen, the only returning starter for the Cardinal, led the team with 18.1 points per game (third-best in the Pac-10) and shot .472 from three-point territory, second-best in the Pac-10 . He was named a first team All-American by Associated Press, The Sporting News and the John Wooden team. He was named second team All-America by ESPN.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and was a finalist for both the Naismith Player of the Year and the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year awards.
The 10-player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced on March 26, 2002 and one will be selected as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy on April 7, 2002. The Wooden Award is given to the nation's 'Most Outstanding College Basketball Player of the Year.' There will also be a Midseason Top 30 team released by the committee in late December.
