Former OSU Rower Joey Hansen Earns Spot On National Team
Aug. 7, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Former Oregon State rowing standout Joey Hansen has earned a spot on the U.S. National Team in the men's eight boat, it was announced Tuesday. The team will travel to Lucerne, Switzerland to compete in the 2001 FISA World Rowing Championships August 19-26.
After two months of two-a-day practices, Hansen, a three-year letterman who learned to row at Oregon State, earned the three seat on what is considered the premier men's boat in the United States - the National Team's eight.
'This is a dream come true,' Hansen said. 'Since I began rowing, this has been a goal of mine. I'd like to be in the eight boat each summer and then row in the summer Olympics in Greece in 2004, but for the short-term, there's nowhere else I want to be. I'm very happy.'
Hansen, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., is one of 57 men and women that make up the National Team, whose roster includes nine Olympians.
David Reischman, Hansen's varsity coach at Oregon State, is a member of the World Championships coaching staff this summer, and has witnessed Hansen's success.
'This says a lot about Joey Hansen as an individual. Three years ago, he had a chance to go to the Pre-Elite Camp, but didn't perform well. He knew he had to make some changes, and he did it. Here he is in the top boat in the country three years later.'
An engineering major, Hansen successfully balanced academics and competition throughout his career at Oregon State. However, Hansen has enjoyed the chance to focus solely on rowing this summer.
'I'm an engineering major, so during the year, I've always been focused on academics. It's been great to get away this summer,' Hansen said.
The men's crew, which averages 23 years of age, has just one veteran, Bryan Volpenhein. Volpenhein won two world championships as a member of the men's eight and rowed in the Sydney Olympics.
