PULLMAN, Wash. -- The USA TODAY/American Volleyball Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, released Monday, shows the Washington State University volleyball team ranked 29th.

The defending national champion, Nebraska, was the overwhelming preseason favorite with 1,623 points, and 63 ballots selected the Huskers first. Nebraska finished the 2000 season undefeated in 34 matches.

The Pacific-10 Conference had four schools listed among the top 10, including USC second, Arizona sixth, UCLA seventh, and Stanford tenth. The Pac-10 placed two more schools on the preseason list as the Cougars were 29th and Arizona State was listed at 39th.

In addition to the four Pac-10 schools in the top ten, Washington State will also meet #12 Pacific at the Cougar Challenge Tournament, Sept. 1, at Pullman, and #19 Kansas State at the Wildcat Classic, Sept. 8, at Manhattan, Kan. Another WSU foe at the Wildcat Classic, will be Arkansas, ranked 42nd in the preseason poll.

This Friday, Aug. 17, Cougar volleyball season ticket-holders are invited to a special, 'Night with the Cougs,' set to begin at 7 p.m. For $6 per person, season ticket holders will meet Head Coach Cindy Fredrick and the team as they conduct a clinic in Bohler Gym to explain the new rally scoring playing rules and discuss the coaching strategies for playing games to 30 points. An intrasquad scrimmage will begin around 8 p.m. with pizza and pop served afterward. Season tickets are currently on sale and may be purchased at the WSU Athletic Ticket Office at the Cougar Depot or by calling 1-800-Go COUGS.
