Aug. 14, 2001
Stanford, Calif. - Metropolitan West Financial, Inc. (MetWest Financial) and the Stanford University Athletic Department today announced the creation of the MetWest Stanford National Training Center.
Operating under the Stanford swimming coaches and from existing training facilities on the Stanford University campus, the goal of the center will be to provide cutting-edge training opportunities that will help elite swimmers reach their full potential at the international level, including the Olympic Games. Swimmers in the program will compete under the MetWest Stanford National Training Center (MWSN) club team name.
The Stanford swimming program has produced and trained numerous Olympic swimmers in the past, including 2000 gold medallists Misty Hyman, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres. The trio won six gold medals at the Sydney Olympic Games. Current swimming head coach Richard Quick has impressive coaching experience. Quick has coached in five Olympiads, including three of the last four as the U.S. head coach and has 12 NCAA championships as a collegiate head coach.
MetWest Financial will provide financial support that will help furnish the center with first-rate personnel and the most technologically advanced training equipment available to the sport of swimming. Among other benefits, swimmers and coaches in the program will make full use of the state-of-the-art Avery Aquatic Center. The facility features three exhibition pools, including two Olympic-size pools, and the Maas Family Diving Facility.
'The relationship between the Stanford Athletic Department and Metropolitan West Financial is a perfect example of the private sector giving invaluable support to the United States Olympic effort,' stated Quick. 'MetWest's sponsorship will help our staff uphold Stanford's long-standing tradition of developing top-performing, acclaimed athletes.'
Richard Hollander, president and chief executive officer of MetWest Financial, added, 'MetWest Financial and its affiliate companies have a strong commitment to professional excellence, which we believe is derived from important characteristics like integrity and perseverance, and applies to all occupational arenas. This sponsorship is in line with our core philosophy. We are honored to offer our assistance in developing these key attributes in some of our nation's top athletes, thus fostering their growth.'
