Soccer Takes Preseason Tour to England

Seattle - The Washington men's soccer team departs Seattle Aug. 15 for an intensive preseason tour to England Aug. 15-26, visiting the soccer hotspots around the country and visiting and competing against some of the best-known soccer clubs in the world.
In the first tour of its kind for a Washington soccer team, the Huskies are scheduled to play six matches throughout Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and London They will face reserve teams from perennial powers such as Everton, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandria.
The tour starts in the major soccer cities of Manchester and Liverpool, in the northwest end of England and the team will headquarter for six nights at Chester College in the historic Roman city of Chester. Located there are soccer powershouse clubs Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Manchester City and the smaller Crewe Alexandra. The tour concludes with a four-night in London and a tour of its famous attractions including Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace.
The tour replaces the usual home exhibition season for Washington. The Huskies, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, are led by a seven-player senior class including senior co-captains Bryn Ritchie, a second team all-American, and Ben Somoza, a first team All-Pac-10 honoree in 2000.
Washington opens its 2001 regular season on the road in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies play Fairleigh Dickinson Aug. 31 and defending NCAA champion Connecticut Sept. 1. The first home game is Sept. 14 versus UC-Santa Barbara.
