Soccer Ties First Game in England
Aug. 16, 2001
Everton, England - The Washington men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against the Everton Reserves in its first game of the preseason tour through England. The Huskies, who departed Seattle Wednesday morning, touched down in England Thursday morning and went straight to Liverpool and the Everton Training Grounds for the game.
The reserves are second-level players from Everton's Premiership team, at England's highest level.
'It was play them today or not at all,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said of the game schedule. 'We didn't want to miss the opportunity to play Everton.'
After a scoreless first period, Everton got on the board first when Ian Woods found the back of the net on an unassisted shot in the 46th minute.
Washington evened the score when junior forward Dayo Oyetuga (Everett, Wash./Everett) came off the bench to score in the 65th minute. Sophomore Seth Marsh (Federal Way,Wash./Decatur) deflected a free kick off the opponent and Oyetuga finished when he put it in the net.
'It was a challenge playing the same day we arrived in England,' Wurzberger added. 'But we rose to the occasion. We pulled back after being a goal down. It's a great way to start our trip.'
The Huskies now have three days off for training, sightseeing and a chance to adjust to the time change. The team plans to attend a Manchester United versus Fulham match at Old Trafford. Manchester United, perhaps the best-known sports franchise in the world, is the three-time defending Premiership champion. Fulham, from just outside London, is newly promoted to the Premiership after winning the First Division with ease last year.
Washington's next match is a scheduled for Monday, Aug. 20 versus the Manchester City Reserves. It is the first of four games in four days for the Huskies.
