Simonton Run Highlights Football Scrimmage
Aug. 22, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ken Simonton's 18-yard touchdown run highlighted Oregon State's second football scrimmage of the fall Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers (ranked No. 11 Associated Press, No. 12 ESPN/USA Today) ran 71 plays in overcast, damp conditions on Reser Stadium's artificial turf.
Simonton's touchdown was the only score of the scrimmage, which saw the offense gain 307 yards. The Heisman Trophy candidate rushed for 38 yards on six carries, while starting quarterback Jonathan Smith was 8-for-14 passing for 93 yards in four possessions.
'Offensively, we made a great deal of improvement,' Oregon State head coach Dennis Erickson said. 'We consistently moved the ball. The defense played well, but the intensity level wasn't there like it had been on Saturday.'
In that scrimmage, the Beavers' defense limited the offense to a pair of field goals and 292 yards in 80 plays, it held five quarterbacks to a combined 19-for-42 passing for 181 yards with two interceptions. On Wednesday, the combination of Smith, Nick Stremick, Derek Anderson, Ryan Kanekeberg and Adam Rothenfluh was 18-for-36 for 231 yards with one interception.
Stremick was 4-for-9 passing for 56 yards, Anderson was 3-for-7 for 32 yards with an interception, Kanekeberg was 1-for-3 for 18 yards and Rothenfluh was 2-for-3 for 32 yards. Of the 18 pass completions, seven went for at least 18 yards, that included a 28-yard catch by Seth Trimmer, who had missed the first scrimmage with a shoulder sprain.
James Newson had three catches for 57 yards, including a 49-yarder from Stremick, while Josh Hawkins had three catches for 42 yards, Shawn Kintner three catches for 27 yards and George Gillett two catches for 36 yards.
Patrick McCall had eight carries for 12 yards, with Dwight Wright adding six carries for 27 yards and Steven Jackson six carries for 25 yards. McCall also had a kickoff return of 55 yards and Terrell Roberts had a 39-yard punt return.
Simonton's touchdown capped a crisp 70-yard, five-play drive that included the 28-yard pass from Smith to Trimmer, an 18-yard pass from Smith to Gillett, and Simonton runs of four, two and 18 yards. His touchdown came when he burst up the middle, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and darted into the end zone.
Defensively, there were sacks or tackles for lost yardage by linebacker Nick Barnett, defensive tackle Brian Tulikihihifo, defensive end Alvin Steen, linebacker Eric Tuma and defensive end Bill Swancutt. The scrimmage's only turnover came when D.J. Coote picked off Anderson in the end zone on a deep pass intended for Kenny Farley.
Reserve linebacker Chaz Scott left the scrimmage with a sprained right knee. OSU's next scrimmage will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as the Beavers continue to get ready for their season-opener at Fresno State on Sept. 2.
