Huskies Complete First Fall Scrimmage

Aug. 25, 2001

Seattle - The Washington football team held its first fall scrimmage of the season at Husky Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Split into three units, the team ran through 100 plays from scrimmage, including several phases of the kicking game. The scrimmage was originally scheduled for The Evergreen State College, but wet and slipper field conditions, caused by three days of record rainfall, forced the scrimmage back to the Huskies' home stadium.

First-team quarterback Cody Pickett completed six of 12 passes for 62 yards and one score during the two-hour practice session. Freshman Reggie Williams led all UW pass catchers with four receptions for 70 yards. Junior Paul Arnold had three catches for 49 yards, including a 30-yard scoring pass. Walkon Matt DeBord came up with the day's biggest play, a 58-yard touchdown score from freshman signalcaller Casey Paus to end the scrimmage.

Returning running backs Rich Alexis and Willie Hurst combined for 54 yards and two scoring runs on 11 attempts. Both alternated with the first-team offense.

'It showed that we have some playmakers on the team who made some plays,' says Husky coach Rick Neuheisel. 'We had some guys rise up today. I thought Marquis Cooper, on defense, played really well. I thought Sam Cunningham showed that he could be a reliable corner for us.

'There was great effort up front. We put our offensive line in a difficult situation by throwing the ball a lot to see if they could handle the protection. For the most part, they did a good job.

'With the rhythm of everything, I was satisfied. Certainly I'm not at all at ease that we are ready to play Michigan yet, but I satisfied that we are on schedule.'

Washington opens its 2001 season on Sept. 8 when the Huskies play host to Michigan at Husky Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised by ABC Sports.

The Huskies conclude two-a-day drills next week, including their second scrimmage of the fall on Thursday. That scrimmage is closed to the public.

Washington will hold its annual Picture Day on Friday, Aug. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the new East End Practice Field. The first 3,500 fans in attendance will be treated to free food and beverages.
