HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (26-30 at Cal, career 325-197, .623) is beginning his third season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller took over the Bears coaching reins when he was hired in December 1998. He came to Cal after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 successful years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.

BEAR NOTES: The Cal volleyball team will begin the 2001 season at the IKON Husky Classic, hosted at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on the Connecticut campus. The Bears return 10 players (one senior, three juniors, six sophomores) from a team that finished 13-15 overall and 6-12 in the Pac-10 in 2000. In Cal's last match, it defeated host New Mexico 3-0 (15-9, 15-8, 16-14) in the championship of the Albuturkey Classic in Albuquerque, NM to finished the year with three straight victories. The Bears also finished 13-15 in 1999. The back-to-back 13-15 records are the best back-to-back seasons for Cal since the 1988 and '89 campaigns (19-15 and 19-13). It was also the Bears first tournament title since winning the Pepsi/Illinois State Classic in 1997.Junior middle blocker Reena Pardiwala was an Albuturkey Classic all-tournament selection as she recorded 11 kills, a .667 hitting percentage (11 kills, one error, 15 attempts), 13 digs and five block assists against New Mexico. Against Northern Arizona in the opening match of the tournament, Pardiwala had a .417 hitting percentage (seven kills, two errors, 12 attempts), 12 digs and four block assists. Pardiwala finished the 2000 season with a school record .298 hitting percentage (219 kills, 80 errors, 466 attempts), topping the previous record of .293 set by Sylvie Monnet in 1983. Other highlights for Bears returnees during the 2000 season were sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy being named honorable mention on the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and junior setter Caity Noonan was named honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic. Senior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee had two triple-doubles and now has three triple-doubles in her college career. Last year, McNamee had 11 kills, 11 digs and 37 assists Sept. 1 at Nevada, and 11 kills, 41 assists and 14 digs Nov. 16 versus Oregon State. The Bears competed in three tournaments in 2000, going 2-1 at the Silver Legacy/Ray Wersching Invite, 1-1 during the Golden Bear Volleyball Classic and 2-0 at the Albuturkey Classic. Abernathy was all-tournament at the Silver Legacy Invite, McNamee was all-tournament at the Golden Bear Classic and Pardiwala was all-tournament at the Albuturkey Classic.

CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: Cal will be making its first career appearances versus New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut at the IKON Husky Classic. New Hampshire finished the 2000 season 23-11 and will be led by 5-10 sophomore outside hitter Alyson Coler, who was the 2000 American East Conference Rookie of the Year. Massachusetts was 14-13 last year and are led by 5-10 senior outside hitter Lymarie Llovet, who had 299 kills and 273 digs in 2000. Connecticut were 20-13 last season and will be led by 6-0 junior outside hitter Melissa Wooley, who recorded 342 kills, 30 service aces and 84 total blocks in 2000.
