2001 Football Daily Update

Aug. 29, 2001

Stanford University special teams (and defensive ends) coach Phil Zacharias discusses the kicking game and who will be returning kickoffs and punts in 2001.

On the performance of the kickers in practice:
'What we have tried to do is limit Mike Biselli's role to what he does best which is kickoffs, extra point and field goals. Just trying to get him back on track was one thing. At punter weare still not exactly where we would like to be, but we have confidence in Eric Johnson andGreg Davis. They have gotten better, so we are hoping to just improve our consistency withthe punting game.'

On the expectations for placekicker Mike Biselli in 2001:
'Mike is really one of our team leaders, so that part is really big in the grand scheme ofthings. We want to get him back to where he was two years ago. I think he can be the bestkicker in the Pac-10, if not beyond. We are just trying to get him to where he can do thethings that he can do.'

On the punting situation:
'Right now Eric Johnson is our punter. Greg Davis is a guy that has worked real hard andhas gotten better. Obviously if we get into an emergency we can go back to Mike, but that isnot what we want to do. We are working with Eric and showing confidence in him and wefeel very confident that he will come in and do a great job for us this year.'

On the kick returners:
'Our kickoff returner has been Ryan Wells and we've also put Brian Allen back there withhim. We have some younger guys too that I think are going to be exciting when they get theopportunity. Right now Ryan Wells and Brian Allen are going to start at kickoff return forus. Punt return is Luke Powell, and we think that he is very exciting when he gets the ball.Luke is our number one guy, but Ryan Fernandez and Leigh Torrence are both behind himand have some skills too. Luke is the guy that we think can make our punt return teamremind us of what we were when we had Troy back there.'
