Volleyball Takes Two Wins in Cougar Challenge Tournament

Aug. 31, 2001

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University claimed two wins in the first day of the two-day, five-team Les Schwab Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tournament at Bohler Gym Friday.

The Cougars opened the 2001 season with a sweep of Bradley University (30-14, 30-25, 30-23) and then used the broom against Boise State (30-21, 30-12, 30-18). WSU is now 2-0.

University of the Pacific, ranked 12th in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 preseason poll, narrowly escaped with a five-game win over Bradley and went on to sweep Gonzaga in the afternoon, moving the Tigers' record to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in the Challenge Tournament.

WSU swept Bradley University in three games as LaToya Harris led all players with 13 kills. Cougar Holly Harris had four blocks and Kali Surplus dished up 39 assists. Sam Hardwick, Bradley, had 18 digs and 26 assists. WSU hit .252 as a team while Bradley struggled to .040.

'Having watched Bradley play UOP, we were a little scared because they were a really good blocking team and played absolutely incredible defense,' Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. 'They were a tougher match to start out with than I would have liked to have started out with.'

In the nightcap, Washington State used outstanding play from the middle to break a first game 15-all tie and never was behind again. WSU's 12 service aces to Boise State's one, provided a spark for the Cougs in the rally-scoring format. The Cougars were led by the 10 kills from Holly Harris who also had eight digs and four blocks. LaToya Harris tallied eight kills and six blocks while Surplus rang up 31 assists and six kills. Zanda Bautre led the Cougars in the digs column with nine. Boise State's Kelly Hadd was the Broncos' kill leader with six while Jacqueline Heler had 13 digs. BSU hit a negative .039 while WSU hid .277 and out-blocked the Broncos nine to three.

'I was pleased with the way we played against Boise State, particularly the way we served and passed,' Fredrick said. 'The serving was very aggressive and very good. I really liked the way Kali was distributing sets - getting the ball to a lot of people - which is going to be very important to us down the road. Kali was setting the ball wherever she chose to and that's what we need to see. And 'Toya had one of her best blocking nights with six blocks. Adrian Hankoff was blocking well tonight too with good reads and good reach-over on her blocks and she's crucial for us blocking.'

Senior co-captain Surplus added, 'I thought it felt awesome. We were out there connecting. Everything was going right. Passing was amazing, defense was amazing, and we were amazing.'

Holly Harris said, 'With so many fans tonight, it was such a good way to start off the season with so much crowd support on a tournament game. So thanks to our fans for coming out.'

Gonzaga opened the season with a 3-1 win over Boise State before falling to Pacific.

Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with Boise State playing Bradley, followed by the WSU vs. Gonzaga match at noon. Pacific takes on Boise State at 2 p.m., Bradley plays Gonzaga at 4 p.m., and in the finale, Washington State plays Pacific at 7 p.m.
