OMAHA, Neb. -
OMAHA, Neb. - The 2001 men's soccer season got off to a rough start for Oregon State, as the Beavers (0-1-0) dropped a 1-0 double-overtime decision to Drake (1-0-0) in the first game of Creighton's Diadora Challenge tournament at Tranquility Park on Sunday in front of a crowd of 1,410.
OSU's Peter Billmeyer saved three shots and the defense controlled the Bulldog attack for much of the night, allowing just 10 shots before Drake's Andrew Kewley put a Brian Daux cross pass in the net at the 108:56 mark.
'Our guys put forth a great effort in overtime, but we just couldn't put our opportunities away,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'Overall, our backs looked very sharp tonight throughout the entire game. We had several opportunities but were unable to put them away. That came back and haunted us.'
OSU clipped off 12 second-half shots and 16 total on the night, including four by freshman Ignacio Cid, as the front line put the pressure on Drake goalkeeper Zack Brennan throughout the game. Aaron McHardy, Ryan Smith and Ross Duncan fired two shots apiece for the Beavers.Oregon State battles No. 2 Creighton Sunday evening in the final game of the tournament beginning at 5:30 p.m. PDT.
