UCLA Women Place Second, Bruin Men Third At Saturday's CS Fullerton/Jammin' Cross Country Invitational

UCLA women's cross country squad placed second and the Bruin men werethird on Saturday at the CS Fullerton/Jammin' Cross Country Invitational,held at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.
The Bruin women placed second in the team standings with 51 points and theUCLA men were third, with 82. Stanford, preseason rated No. 1 in bothwomen's and men's competition, won both team titles and both individualcrowns.
In women's team scoring (Top 5 of 15 teams), Stanford placed first with 18points, followed by UCLA (51), UC Santa Barbara (98), USC (112) and CSFullerton (190). The individual winner over the 5000m course wasStanford's Mariel Ettinger (17.33.1).
The Bruin women placed six runners in the Top 20, including three truefreshmen. UCLA was led by freshman Alejandra Barrientos, who placed fifthin a time of 17:54.1. Joining her in the Top 10 was junior Elaine Canchola,in seventh-place (17:58.8). The Bruins had four more runners finish in theTop 20 ' freshman Carmen Winant (12th, 18:13.8), freshman Lori Mann (14th,18:28.3), sophomore Jessica Marr (16th, 18:32.2) and sophomore ValerieFlores (17th, 18.32.7).
'I was happy with the way we ran our race plan,' said Bruin head coach EricPeterson. 'We have a strong freshman class, placing three among our Top 5runners. Six of our athletes ran their best races ever. Despite our youthand inexperience, I was very impressed and pleased with our team effort.'In men's team scoring (Top 5 of 12 teams), Stanford won with 25 points,followed by Cal Baptist (64), UCLA (82), Cal Coast TC (111) and CSFullerton (153). Stanford's Sean Knapp placed first over the 8000m coursein a time of 24:32.6.
The Bruin men had two runners in the Top 10 and a third finishing in theTop 15. UCLA was led by senior Bryan Green, who finished fifth with a markof 24:49.2. Dating back to last season, with the exception of last year'sNCAA Championships, Green has placed in the Top 10 of every UCLA crosscountry competition. Joining him in the Top 10 was sophomore Jon Rankin, ineighth-place (24:58.3). UCLA also got a strong performance from freshmanRobert Kubler, placing 15th (25:38.5).
'Green and Rankin were very impressive,' Peterson said. 'They are inmidseason form and I think showed they can run with anyone in the Pac-10and our region. Our combination of the leadership from Green and Rankin andthe fine effort by our newcomers were impressive.'
Next week, UCLA will train at Mammoth Lakes and next Saturday (Sept. 8),the Bruin women's and men's 'B' teams will compete at the UC Irvine Invite.
