Volleyball Defeats Sacramento State In Five Games
Sept. 1, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gina Schmidt hit .362 with a match-high 21 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a five-game win over Sacramento State in the final match of the Volleyball Showcase on Saturday night. Game scores were 30-25, 30-13, 23-30, 24-30 and 15-11.
The win was a team effort on OSU's part, as five Beavers finished with double-figures in the kills column. Katrina Nelson provided a big spark for OSU, coming up with 16 kills and a .444 attack percentage, while Joscelyn Hannaford tacked on 15 kills. Michele Solomon had 13, and K.C. Frederic added 11 for the Beavers (2-1).
OSU dominated the defensive end of the match, outdigging the Hornets, 98-77. Frederic led the way with 24 digs, while Hannaford and Schmidt each had 16 to finish with double-doubles on the night. Nikki Neuburger dug 12 balls, and Laura Collins also posted a double-double with 67 assists and 11 digs.
Solomon led the way at the net with a match-high eight blocks, while three other Beavers had at least four blocks.
'There's no way we would have gone 2-1 this weekend without a total team effort,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'This is the strongest amount of depth I've had since I've been here, and it's nice having those options. When great things happen off the bench, that makes us that much stronger.'
Sacramento State (1-2) struggled in the first two games (hitting .125 and .000), and while the Hornets didn't necessarily pick things up in the third game when they hit .189 as a team, they were able to capitalize on errors on OSU's side of the court. The Beavers also hit .189 in game three and finished the fourth game with a disappointing .036 attack percentage.
But OSU came back in the decisive fifth game to hit an impressive .579, with 13 kills and just two errors.
'In game five, at that point, the slate's clean. It's 2-2, and it's a game to 15,' Somera said. 'We relaxed and got off to a good start. We got a sideout on the first play and were serving with a 1-0 lead. We got a cushion and were able to get a lead. We had some room and every swing wasn't quite as crucial, and that's how you need to play every point.'
The Beavers finished second to San Jose State in the annual tournament, and OSU's Schmidt and Collins were named to the all-tournament team. SJSU's Savannah Smith was named the Most Valuable Player, and her teammates Brianna Blair and Liz Hudson were also named to the team. Sacramento State's Tasman Dwyer also received recognition.
