No. 5 Women's Soccer Rallies for 4-2 Win over No. 24 Michigan
Sept. 2, 2001
BERKELEY - No. 5 California had to twice come back from a one goal deficit to defeat No. 24 Michigan, 4-2, Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (2-0) claimed the California Invitational with today's win and Friday's 4-0 victory over Pacific. In the earlier game today, Pacific (1-1) defeated Loyola Marymount (1-1), 2-1.
'We talked at halftime that we felt our effort was missing in the first half,' Cal coach Kevin Boyd said. 'I thought we got outworked. Even though it was 2-1, it felt like Michigan, which is a good team, came out and played harder than we did. That's part of it being early in the season and the second game of a weekend. We worked quite a bit harder in the second half.'
Michigan (0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on an unassisted goal from midfielder Amy Sullivant.
All-American junior forward Laura Schott evened the game at 1-1 in the 25th minute when she converted on a long service from junior midfielder Brittany Kirk. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Valenzuela also was credited with an assist.
Sullivant quickly reclaimed the lead for Michigan with her second goal of the game and third of the weekend when she received a throw-in from Theresa Dwyer and nailed a 25-yard shot in the 27th minute.
After trailing 2-1 at the half, the Bears owned the second stanza. Senior forward Kyla Sabo knocked in sophomore midfielder/forward Kassie Doubrava's corner Kick in the 60th minute to tie the score at 2-2.
'We were a little nervous coming in at halftime,' Sabo said. 'We were also more pumped at halftime. I was nervous, but I think that helped us come back, making sure we worked hard.'
Sabo tallied the game-winner in the 69th minute after freshman midfielder/forward Kacy Hornor dribbled several defenders before feeding the ball to Sabo.
Doubrava added an insurance goal in the 84th minute. Schott found Sabo on the left wing, and Sabo delivered a perfect pass across the goal mouth to a wide-open Doubrava.
The Bears outshot the Wolverines, 19-12. Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech had seven saves, while Cal freshman goalkeeper Mallory Moser was credited with four.
Cal is on the road for the next five contests before returning home to face Fresno State, Sept. 28, at 3:30 p.m. Next weekend, the Bears play at Texas, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. PT, and at Texas A&M, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m. PT.
