No. 8 Clemson Slips Past Men's Soccer, 2-1
Sept. 2, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. - California (1-1-0) almost took No. 8 Clemson (1-1-0) to overtime before the Tigers' Paul Souders converted on a header in the 82th minute of the game to top the Bears, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium in the FILA Classic.
Cal took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Austin Ripmaster got behind the Clemson defense and punched the ball past Doug Warren. But the Tigers tied the match at 58:44 when Fuller booted in the ball after Cal goalkeeper Josh Saunders knocked it off his own crossbar.
The Bears edged out Clemson in shots on goal, 10-9. Saunders got the starting nod for the second time in as many games. The junior transfer from Cal State Fullerton, making his first return to Titan Stadium since transferring to Cal, stopped seven shots on goal.
Cal will host the fifth annual adidas-Legacy Tournament Sept. 7 and 9 at Edwards Stadium. The Bears face off against Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Both games are slated for 2 p.m.
