Kristee Porter Selected Student-Athlete of the Week

Sept. 4, 2001

Senior outside hitter Kristee Porter (Tyler, TX/John Tyler HS) of the UCLA Women's Volleyball Team was selected as the Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 3.

Porter was named the MVP of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic as the Bruins took home their first HAL Classic Tournament title since 1997. Porter, also this week's Pac-10 Women's Volleyball Player of the Week, became the first two-time MVP in the tournament's history. En route to MVP honors, Porter recorded her 2,000th career kill on Sept. 2 against Hawaii.

For the weekend, she had 62 kills for a 6.20 per-game average (14 vs. Michigan, 23 vs. 19th-ranked Kansas State and 25 vs. fifth-ranked Hawaii) along with 36 digs (3.60/game), five service aces and nine blocks.

This is Porter's sixth career Student-Athlete of the Week honor, tying her with Mohini Bhardwaj of the gymnastics team for most career honors.

Also nominated: Nelson Akwari (men's soccer), Alejandra Barrientos (women's cross country), Bryan Green (men's cross country), Mary-Frances Monroe (women's soccer) and Tab Perry (football).
