USA Men Beat Cuba 111-70 at Goodwill Games

The USA Men's Basketball Team defeated Cuba, 111-70 Wednesday (Sept.5) at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. It was the USA's third winin as many days and earned the U. S. the Group A No. 1 seed for Saturday'smedal round.

The USA men have been unstoppable in its first three games, winning by76 (132-56 vs. Mexico), 30 (97-67 vs. Argentina) and 41 (111-70 vs. Cuba),for an average margin of victory of 48.3 points game.

Baron Davis, UCLA's standout point guard from 1997-99 who is now astar with the Charlotte Hornets, has started all three games for the USAand has been the team's playmaker. Against Cuba, he started and played 21minutes, with eight points, four assists and one blocked shot and steal.

The USA men resume play at 1:45 p.m. (Brisbane time) on Saturday(Sept. 8) with the medal round semifinals. The Goodwill Games gold (2 p.m.Brisbane time/9 p.m. PDT) and bronze medal (11:30 a.m. Brisbane time) gamesare slated for Sunday, Sept. 9.

The eight-team Goodwill Games men's basketball field includesArgentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Mexico, New Zealand and the U.S. The USA is in Pool A with Argentina, Cuba and Mexico, while Pool Bconsists of Australia, Brazil, Canada and New Zealand. Each team plays around-robin competition within its group (three games each). The two topteams from each group advance to the medal round, while the remaining teamsplay a classification round to determine fifth through eighth place.

The USA men's team is the defending Goodwill Games champion, havingwon the gold in New York at the 1998 Games with a thrilling 93-85 overtimewin over Australia. The USA men have medaled in all four prior GoodwillGames, capturing gold in 1998 and 1986, silver in 1990 and bronze in 1994.All four of those USA men Goodwill Games teams were comprised of collegeplayers (the 2001 squad is comprised of NBA players).
