Q & A With Austin Lee
Sept. 6, 2001
Hi Austin, good luck this season. Boston College looked good last week so how do you think you match up with them?
'Their style of play matches up pretty well with ours. We both like to run the ball and we pride ourselves in defending the run but they're a smashmouth team- kind of like what we think we are.'
With 4 Pac-10 teams currently ranked in the top-25, the conference looks like one of the toughest in the nation. Which games on Stanford's schedule do you think present the biggest challenges, and why?
'Well, pretty much all of them. They are all really tough teams and even our out-of-conference opponents are tough this year (San Jose State, Boston College, Notre Dame). Not to mention Oregon and Washington are tough places to play.'
How can I get into Stanford? I would love to go there.
'Just make sure you do the best you can in the classroom in high school, but also don't limit your options.'
What are your favorite and least favorite parts about being a defensive end?
'The best part about it obviously is when you're able to tackle the quarterback and get a sack and they put your face up on the big screen. The hardest part is when you're getting blocked by those big, fat guys who weigh a lot more than you do.'
Who else recruited you out of high school? Was it a tough choice?
'It was a real tough choice. I took all my trips, I went to Ohio State, USC, Colorado, UCLA and here but it came down to the fact that I was happy here and made my decision after that.'
With the graduation of Willie Howard, which defensive lineman do you think will be double-teamed?
'Well I think that teams will probably mix it up on us. We're just going to have to come together as a group and try to take up the slack. I think if we all work together and concentrate on the things we do best we'll be able to overcome that great loss.'
