Cats and Candrea Picked for USA Softball Camp

OKLAHOMA CITY - Nine University of Arizona current and former softball players and coach Mike Candrea have been selected to participate in the USA Softball National team camp later this month in Chula Vista, Calif.

USA Softball will pick players to participate in 2002 National Team competition next summer as well as for a USA Team to play in the 2002 South Pacific Classic in Perth, Australia next year.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Leah O'Brien-Amico leads the contingent, along with current Wildcats Jennie Finch, Mackenzie Vandergeest and Lovieann Jung, while former UA players chosen include Lauren Bauer, Lindsey Collins, Toni Mascarenas, Nicole Giordano and Amy Chellevold.

Only UCLA, with 11 current or former players, had more athletes chosen for the competition.

Coach Mike Candrea will join a group of coaches that includes Ken Eriksen of South Flordai, Michelle Gromacki of Cal State Fullerton, Jay Miller of Missouri, John Rittman of Stanford and Kirk Walker of Oregon State.
