No. 15 Cal State Fullerton Tops Men's Soccer, 1-0, in Overtime

Sept. 7, 2001

BERKELEY - No. 15 Cal State Fullerton (2-0-1) took advantage of a penalty kick awarded in the fourth minute of double overtime to edge California (1-2-0), 1-0, in the fifth annual Cal adidas-Legacy Classic Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

Sophomore forward Hector Lima put home a shot over the left shoulder of goalkeeper Josh Saunders to put the Bears away in the 110th minute of the game.

'A game that goes a 110 minutes, you can't blame it on one play,' Bears head coach Kevin Grimes said. 'Granted it was a poor call (penalty kick), but we've got to be able to finish our chances in the 110 minutes because if you look at the quality of opportunities in this game on both sides, I think we definitely outnumbered them.'

Cal played toe-to-toe with the fifteenth-ranked Titans, matching them in shots with 10 on the day. Forwards Austin Ripmaster and Chris Roner along with midfielder Mike Munoz led the Bears with two shots each. Orellana and Buckley led CSUF with three apiece.

Saunders, who transferred to Cal from CSUF last season, and counterpart Jeff McKeever both tallied six saves.

'We've got to get through that adversity and bounce back on Sunday,' asserted Grimes. 'We've got a tough game coming up against Loyola Marymount.'

In the first game, Stanford (3-0) also downed its opponent on a penalty kick as the Cardinal beat Loyola Marymount (0-3), 1-0.

In the 60th minute, senior midfielder Derek Shanahan kicked in a shot toward the right goal post just over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Dan Sheridan for the game-winner.

Aaron Biddle and Roger Levesque led Stanford with three shots each while Jeff Kovar attempted two shots to lead the Lions. The Cards took a total of 15 shots to LMU's 7. Sheridan made seven saves for the Lions allowing in just the penalty kick . Stanford's Andrew Terris totaled four saves.

Cal State Fullerton plays Stanford in the first game at 11:30 a.m., while the Bears face LMU at 2 p.m. on Sunday, the second and final day of the adidas-Legacy Classic.
