Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Match to Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. - Despite outshooting Montana 19-8, the University of Oregon women's soccer team lost its first match this season, falling 1-0 to the Grizzlies on Friday.

The Ducks (1-1-1), who have outshot their opponent in each game this year, gave up the lone goal to Montana's Erin Smith, a Eugene native, in the 25th minute. Saraid Faville assisted on Smith's goal. Montana, which also defeated Oregon last year 1-0 at Eugene, improves to 2-1-0.

Early in the second half, the Ducks appeared to have scored, but the play was whistled offsides before the shot. The Ducks outshot the Grizzlies 10-2 in the second half.

Oregon goalkeeper Sarah Peters played all 120 minutes, recording three saves. Beth Bowler and Ann Westermark led the Ducks with three shots apiece.

Montana's starting goalkeeper, Katie Peck, went down with a knee injury in the 14th minute. Grizzly reserve Jennifer Zuhlke replaced her and finished with eight saves.

The Ducks next travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Tennessee Tournament. On Friday, Oregon takes on Vanderbilt and on Sunday, the Ducks will play Tennessee.
