No. 10 Women's Soccer Falls To No. 12 Texas A&M, 3-1
Sept. 9, 2001
SAN MARCOS, Texas - No. 12 (NSCAA) California lost to No. 10 (NSCAA) Texas A&M, 3-1, Sunday evening on the campus of Southwest Texas State. The loss was the Bears (3-1) first of the year, while the Aggies (1-1) posted their first win of the season.
The game wasn't played in College Station due to Texas A&M's field being unplayable from excessive rain during the last couple of weeks.
Lindsey Johnson put Texas A&M ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute on an assist from Kristen Strutz.
Senior forward Kyla Sabo sent Cal into the locker room with the game tied at 1-1 with a goal in the 44th minute. Sabo now leads the Bears with nine points (4G, 1A). Junior defender Kim Stocklmeir was credited with the assist.
Freshman Mallory Moser played the first half in goal for the Bears, giving up one goal and making one save. Sophomore Katie Pittman saw her first collegiate action in the second half. She made seven saves but gave up the final two goals of the game.
In the 68th minute, Texas A&M's Nikki Thrasher tallied what would eventually be the game-winner after receiving a pass from Johnson.
Emma Smith added an insurance goal for the Aggies in the 84th minute by converting on a feed from Amanda Burke.
The Aggies outshot Cal 27-4 for the game and held a 20-1 edge in the second half.
Cal next travels to Santa Clara, Sunday, Sept. 16. The Bears look to avenge last year's 2-0 NCAA Second Round loss to the Broncos.
