No. 4 Nebraska Holds Off Women's Soccer In 3-2 Win
Sept. 9, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Senior forward Kelly Rheem scored the game-winning goal at 80:03 as the No. 4 Nebraska Huskers defeated the No. 19 USC Trojans, 3-2, in women's soccer Sunday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Rheem scored a top shelf goal after teammate Christine Latham's shot hit the right post and bounced out in front of the goal to Rheem.
The Huskers (3-0) did not take long to get on the scoreboard when junior Kori Saunders scored at 0:58 off a shot from five yards in front of the net. The wild start continued minutes later when Nebraska defender Becky Preston accidently knocked a pass into her own goal at 3:02 to tie the game at 1-1.
Saunders scored her second goal at 18:34 off a corner kick by Meghan Anderson. The Trojans (1-2) tied the game early in the second half when freshman Megan Kakadelas (Carlsbad/La Costa Canyon HS) recorded her first goal at USC on an open net goal at 49:43. Kakadelas scored easily when sophomore forward Jessica Edwards (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson HS) knocked a shot off Nebraska goalie Erin Miller, who came out of the box on the breakaway.
Miller and USC senior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS) recorded seven saves each.
'We have gotten better with every game, but we just did not have the knockout punch today,' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'The effort in the second half was the best I have ever seen here at USC. Overall, the freshmen played tremendous. If we come out with that effort in every game, not many teams in the nation will beat us.'T
he Trojans outshot the Huskers by a 15-14 margin. Nebraska dominated in the first half, but USC responded in the second half before the game-winner by Rheem.
It was only the fifth loss in 34 matches by USC at the Coliseum.
USC will compete at the 2001 Fila Cup, hosted by Loyola Marymount, next weekend. The Women of Troy will play Wake Forest on Friday (Sept. 14) at 1 p.m. and Kentucky on Sunday (Sept. 16) at 11 a.m.
