Volleyball Leaps Up Two Spots To Third in USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll

Sept. 10, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz.- The undefeated Arizona volleyball team broke into new ground Monday afternoon. The Wildcats moved up two spots, from fifth to third, in the latest version of the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll. The no. 3 spot is the highest ranking ever for an Arizona team, bettering the previous rank of fourth set in the final week of the regular season last year.

Defending national champion Nebraska strengthened its grip on the top spot with a undefeated weekend and Long Beach State, which a week ago snapped the Huskers' 36 match winning streak, remained second. The Wildcats received a total of 1,434 points in the poll to rank third, including one first- place vote.

Stanford, whom the Cats will meet in their Pac-10 opener this week, knocked off previously fourth-ranked Penn State on the road. The victory, combined with two other wins, places the Cardinal in the Nittany Lions' old spot at fourth. Pac-10 rival USC rounds out the top five with 1,316 points. UCLA, whose only loss this season came against top-ranked Nebraska in Lincoln, is ranked eighth in this week's poll, giving the Pac-10 four teams in the top eight.

The third-ranked Cats and fourth-ranked Cardinal will meet in Palo Alto on Friday. First serve in Maples Pavilion is set for 7 p.m. Arizona will also face California in Berkeley on Saturday at 7 p.m. as well.
