UCLA-Arizona State Football Game Postponed

Sept. 11, 2001

The Pacific-10 Conference has voted that Conference competition in all sports will not be conducted through the weekend in sympathy to the national tragedy that occured today. Participation in non-conference competition in each sport will be left to the discretion of each institution. Conference Commissioner Tom Hansen was requested to take a leadership role with other Division I conferences in urging postponement of all competition nationally through the weekend.

UCLA earlier had postponed all events other than football scheduled through Sunday, Sept. 16.

The UCLA-Arizona State football game scheduled for this Saturday has tentatively been rescheduled for Dec. 1.

'In light of the tragic events which occured in our nation today, it would be inappropriate to continue our scheduled competitions,' said Commissioner Tom Hansen. 'The safety and welfare of our student-athletes is our first priority, along with the safety of our fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the immense tragedy that unfolded today.'

'We feel this is the correct decision to make,' said athletic director Peter T. Dalis. 'Our country has suffered a great tragedy.'
