Sept. 13, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - A combined three doubles teams and four individuals from the Arizona State men and women's tennis teams are ranked nationally, according to the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings released today.
A two-time All-American, Engel won the 2000 Pacific-10 singles champion and reached the NCAA quarterfinals in singles, the furthest any ASU player advanced since the 1986 season. The junior from Glen Ellyn, Illinois set the Arizona State single season record for wins with a 32-8 mark, finishing last season with a No. 6 national ranking.
Bowen and Klinger, who hail from Sydney, Australia and Toronto, Canada respectively, posted an 8-5 record last season, finishing 49th in the nation. Over the past two seasons, the duo has knocked off several nationally ranked teams, including the No. 1 tandem from Stanford.
Other Sun Devil preseason ranked players on the women's side include No. 50 Megan Yeats, a junior from Hudson, New York and No. 79 Mhairi Brown, also a junior from Kirkcaldy, Scotland. In doubles the two players team up to form the 19th-ranked ranked team, while Engel and sophomore Cindy Sureephong come in at No. 44.
Klinger is also ranked in men's singles as he checks in at No. 45. He recorded a 22-11 record last season and holds a 61-29 career mark.
The men and women's preseason rankings are voted on by separate 10-member ITA National Ranking Committees. The next individual ranking will be after the fall season in December. The preseason team rankings will be released prior to the start of the dual match portion of the season in January. The collegiate tennis season is divided into two seasons: the fall 'individual' - singles and doubles - season, and the spring team season.
