Cougar Soccer Bullies `Dogs To Even Season Record

Sept. 21, 2001

SPOKANE, Wash. --- Washington State senior midfielder Liz Duncan knocked in two goals in the first 11 minutes to give the Cougars all they would need in a 2-1 win over Gonzaga Friday at Martin Field.

The Cougars, playing a match for the first time in 14 days, jumped on the Bulldogs early and coasted to their second-straight victory over a regional rival.

Senior Beth Childs set up Duncan's first goal in the seventh minute to give WSU the lead. Just four minutes later, junior Katrina Stroh set the table for Duncan again to put the Bulldogs away.

'We looked like we were going to do a very good job of finishing our chances. Liz Duncan got two early goals and we pretty much had the run of play for the first 35 minutes,' Washington State head coach Dan Tobias said. 'But they (Gonzaga) played very well the next 10 minutes and that carried over to the second half.'

The Bulldogs could only muster three shots for the match compared to 17 for WSU. Gonzaga's Natalie Hardin took advantage of one of those rare opportunities in the 56th minute to give them their first goal of the season.

'They capitalized on our mistake on a ball that should have been cleared out,' Tobias said. 'Sara (Leibowitz) got a hand on it, but it knocked into the corner.'

Despite the late goal and the long layoff, Tobias was happy with what he saw from his Cougars, now 2-2 overall.

'We had trouble finishing in the second half,' Tobias said. 'But statistically it was definitely in our favor. We are pleased with the result. It looked like it would be by a wider margin, but it wasn't. We had a pretty decent rhythm despite not playing for two weeks.'

Washington State will travel to the Rose City next weekend to play Portland State Friday and Portland Sunday afternoon. The Cougars are in the midst of a seven-game road stretch, which will include the first three Pac-10 matches against nationally ranked Washington, Stanford, and California.
