Jessica Edwards Gets Overtime Winner For Women's Soccer
Sept. 21, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore forward Jessica Edwards (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson HS) scored the game-winning goal at 103:51 to give the USC Trojans a 3-2 win Friday against the UC Irvine Anteaters at McAlister Field. It was the first goal of the season for Edwards as freshman Julie Peterson (Mission Viejo/Santa Margarita HS) registered the win in goal in her first career start for the Trojans.
USC improved to 2-3 on the season while UC Irvine fell to 3-2.
A flurry of goals came during a three-minute period. UC Irvine's Erin Tuvey scored off a free kick from Robyn Piotrowski at 17:59 but USC came back 15 seconds later to take the 2-1 lead on a goal by Jackie Fodor. The Anteaters tied the game again at 19:40 when Hayley McNallan scored her fourth goal of the season off a corner kick from Kelly Ridge.
'I thought the team played well today.' said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. 'The biggest adjustment we made in the second half was when Ali (Fennell) moved to right back. She was picking up everything that was coming at her and it really presented some problems for UCI.
'The effort was better today than Tuesday (1-0 loss at San Diego) and we took better care of the ball.'
The Trojans controlled the action with a 19-9 margin in shots, including a 9-3 edge in the second half. Peterson made three saves while Sarah Swancutt made seven saves for the Anteaters.
The three goals by USC were the most in a game this season and equals the number of goals the Trojans had scored in the first four games in 2001.
USC will host Oakland University on Sunday (Sept. 23) at McAlister Field at 1 p.m.
