Third-Ranked Wildcats Handle Oregon State, 3-0

TUCSON, Ariz.- The third-ranked Arizona volleyball team had little trouble with Pac-10 opponent Oregon State, Friday night in McKale Center. The Wildcats dominated all aspects of the match en route to a 30-25, 30-13, 30-20, victory over the Beavers. The Wildcats out-hit, out-blocked and out-dug Oregon State all night. The victory earned Wildcats' head coach David Rubio his 299th career victory and improves Arizona to a perfect 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in the conference.

The Cats got off to a fast start in game one and utilized two, three-run spurts to jump ahead of the Beavers. Setter Dana Burkholder and the Wildcats' offense kept the Beavers off balance through out the first frame. Burkholder distributed the ball all over the court, allowing five players to record three or more kills, including outside hitter Lisa Rutledge's seven. Middle blocker Stefani Saragosa recorded four in the opening game and Burkholder, Jill Talbot and Shannon Torregrosa each had three apiece. The Cats out-hit the Beavers .462 to .200 and out-dug them 22-12 in game one.

Game two was all Arizona from the start. The Cats hit an impressive .417 while limiting OSU to -.038. Arizona tallied four team blocks in the second game to Oregon State's one and also served up three aces, two by reserve setter Lauren Benward. The 17 point margin of victory was the largest for Arizona under the new rally scoring format.

Everything went Arizona's way in game three, including Burkholder's over pass that she hit from way outside the right-hand boundary that fell in front of three Beavers for a kill. For the match Arizona hit a season-high .436 with 54 kills on 101 attempts while committing only 10 errors. They out-dug OSU 46 to 29 and out-blocked them 7.5 to 1.

Rutledge led all players with 13 kills on 22 swings with only one error for a .545 hitting percentage. Saragosa, who entered the weekend leading the NCAA in hitting percentage, connected on 53 percent of her attempts Friday night. She finished with 10 kills on 17 attempts with a lone error. Talbot was stellar again from the right side. She hit a match high .571 with nine kills on 14 attempts and a single error. She also chipped in with 11 digs, five total blocks and four assists. Burkholder dished out 43 assists on the evening and had six digs.

The Wildcats will take to the road next weekend for the most challenging trip of the season. Arizona will face seventh-ranked UCLA on Friday and fifth-ranked USC on Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
