Women's Soccer Ties Idaho, 3-3

Sept. 21, 2001

MOSCOW, Idaho - Oregon State University's women's soccer team battled to a 3-3 tie against University of Idaho on Friday afternoon.

Idaho's Laura Humphreys started the back and forth scoring with a powerful header into the back of the net. Jennifer Kiebel launched a lofty ball from far outside the box in the 8th minute to set up the goal.

The Beavers immediately came back three minutes later as freshman Jillian Nicks finished a cross from Lindsey Beem in the 11th minute.

The Vandals forged a lead before halftime when Sarah Melby's header drove the ball past Beaver keeper Jo Fletcher in a scramble in front of the OSU goal. Jaci Pelton assisted the goal.

'It was a hard-working, physical, blue-collar type of game,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'We started flat and dropped a goal but battled back in the second half.'

Sophomore Courtney Carter led the Oregon State attack out of the break, when she scored in the 46th minute off of a corner kick from Stephanie Lucas.

Idaho regained the lead when Mandy Mollerstuen buried the ball from five yards out. Mollerstuen scored the goal after a deflection off of a Sara Melby shot in the 57th minute of play.

OSU freshman Janelle Joy finished the game's scoring with the first goal of her career in the 72nd minute, off a pass from Morgan Crabtree.

The Vandals held the game in overtime with some tough defensive stops. OSU had 5 shots in the second OT while holding Idaho without an attempt.

'We were unfortunate in overtime not to steal it,' said Fennah. 'Both teams battled hard. I'm pleased with the character of our team to fight back after a couple of bad breaks.'

Oregon State continues its road-swing with a match against Gonzaga University on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
