Hornor scores twice in Cal's 3-1 victory over UNLV
Sept. 22, 2001
LAS VEGAS - Freshman midfielder/forward Kacy Hornor posted her first two collegiate goals to lead No. 12 California to a 3-1 victory over UNLV Friday night at Johann Memorial Field. The Golden Bears improved to 5-1, while the Running Rebels fell to 2-2-2.
The game began about 50 minutes after the scheduled 8 p.m. kickoff due to the UNLV men's tournament running long.
'The game was kind of an ugly one as they were a little more physical than we're used to,' Cal coach Kevin Boyd said. 'They played hard against us. We're just going to have to get used to playing some teams that know they're taking a shot at a strong team. They know they can get some recognition by beating us. We need to learn to put teams like that away early and show why we're a better team and not send it to the wire. As a whole, we're happy we got the win and we're going to learn from it.'
UNLV committed 19 fouls to Cal's 10 in an attempt to keep pace with the Bears.
Hornor gave Cal a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when she took a pass from junior defender Kim Stocklmeir and scored from 20-yards out.
UNLV defender Marni Polakow tied the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute when she sent a clear shot into the right corner of the net. Annii Magliulo was credited with the assist.
In the 68th minute, Hornor scored off a free kick for her second goal of the game, which held up as the game-winner.
Cal concludes a five-game road swing Sunday against San Diego State at 1 p.m.
