Yarnes Paces Men's Golf At William Tucker As Beavs finish 12th

Sept. 22, 2001

David Yarnes paced the Oregon State men's golf team with his 3-over par 219 as the Beavers finished 12th at the William Tucker Invitational on Saturday.

The Beavers shot an 896 at over three rounds at the par-72, 7,253-yard Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. OSU picked up one spot over Friday's first two rounds.

Yarnes, who tallied his third career top-20 finish with a tie for 18th, was accompanied in the top 20 by fellow Beaver Michael Jurgensen, who tied for 20th at 220. Yarnes closed the tournament with a 74 after rounds of 71 and 74 on Friday.

OSU used a strong finish over the last few holes to move up on the leaderboard.

'As a team, we got off to a slow start,' OSU coach Brian Watts said. 'We fought back toward the end though on the par-5s and picked up some shots coming in' edging out SE Louisiana by three strokes.

'Overall, we played well,' Watts continued. 'This was a course where par was a good number - there weren't a lot of scores under par today. It's definitely a course that requires a lot of thought.'

Daren Greig, who tied for 60th, turned in a 75 on Saturday to total a 228, and Sean Deacon fired a 229 and tied for 67th after winning the Northwest Collegiate two weeks ago. Both players lowered their scores in each of the three rounds.

James Salt finished at 103 with a total of 241.

'We've got a way to go, but we definitely came back and played well today,' Watts commented.

Host New Mexico captured the team title, turning in a convincing 5-under 859 to finish 11 ahead of Pepperdine.

New Mexico's Wil Collins and Michael Letzig tied for second at 212, but it was BYU's Manuel Merizalde that carded a clutch 66 on Saturday to take the win by three strokes at 209.

OSU will be back in action at the Husky Invitational on October 1-2, when the Beavers head to Seattle for their third tournament of the year.
