Husky Men's Golfers Open Fall Season at Idaho

Sept. 23, 2001

Seattle - Matt Thurmond, who took over as the head men's golf coach at Washington last spring, leads the Huskies into their first fall tournament at the Idaho Vandal Fall Classic. The event will be held at the University of Idaho Course on Sept. 24-25.

The Vandal Fall Classic will include a 19-team field, including Pac-10 rivals Washington and California. The tournament will include 36 holes of play on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Tee times are scheduled for 8 a.m. both days.

The Huskies return the core of last year's youthful team that finished 26th at the NCAA Championships. Brock Mackenzie, Corey Prugh and Joey Ramos led Washington last year in stroke average as freshmen. They return along with sophomores Dan Potter, juniors John Robertson, Conner Robbins and Derek Berg and senior Gordy Scutt.

Mackenzie posted a 73.06 stroke average last year while posting four top-10 finishes.

Washington will host its annual tournament, The Husky Fall Classic, on Oct. 1 and 2 at Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton.
