No. 12 Women's Soccer Rallies for 3-1 Victory over San Diego State
Sept. 23, 2001
SAN DIEGO - All-American junior forward Laura Schott posted two goals and an assist to help No. 12 California (6-1) rally for a 3-1 victory over San Diego State (4-3) Sunday afternoon at the San Diego State Sports Deck.
After a scoreless first half, San Diego State's Kim Castellanos gave her team a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute when she received a through ball from Arinda Alvarez and scored on a break-away.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Golden Bears came to life in time to pull out the victory. The comeback effort began with Schott picking up an errant back pass in the 81st minute and scoring an unassisted goal to even the game.
About two minutes later, freshman midfielder/forward Kacy Hornor, who made her first collegiate start, netted her second game-winning goal of the weekend. She received a cross from Schott and proceeded to chip Aztecs goalkeeper Linnea Quinones, a member of the Mexican national team, for her third goal in two games.
Cal finished off the scoring in the 87th minute when a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Kim Yokers found the head of Hornor, whose shot hit the right post. The rebound went to Schott in front of goal, and she slipped her shot past the stranded Quinones.
Cal returns home to face Fresno State Friday, Sept. 28, at Edwards Stadium.
