Ochoa Paces Women's Golf at NCAA Fall Preview

Sept. 24, 2001

AUBURN, Wash.-Sophomore Lorena Ochoa carded a 1-under-par 71 Monday to pace the fourth-ranked Arizona women's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Fall Preview. The Wildcats shot a team total of 302 and stand tied for ninth place.

The NCAA Fall Preview, being contested at Washington National Golf Course, features the top teams from last year's NCAA Championships. Arizona finished second at the 2000 NCAA Fall Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Arizona's 14-over-par score of 302 puts the Wildcats nine strokes behind tournament leader Tennessee. Individually, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke and Young-A Yang of Tennessee share first place. Both fired rounds of 2-under-par 70 to seize the lead after round one.

'They don't hand out any trophies after the first round,' Arizona head coach Greg Allen said. 'We're still in position to do really well, nine shots back with 36 holes to play is okay.'

Ochoa, the nation's top-ranked golfer, finished strong, making birdies on three of her final five holes to finish the round in third place. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native made par on the first nine holes of the day.

Junior Laura Myerscough also turned in an impressive performance for the Cats. The junior from Charlseton, Ill., also birdied three of her final five holes of the day to finish the round at even-par. Myerscough's even-par 72 earned her a tie for sixth place. Anne Lee, a junior from Northridge, Calif., carded a 7-over-par 79 Monday and is tied for 69th place.

Freshman Miriam Kraschinski made her collegiate debut Monday for the Wildcats. The New Zealand native opened her UA career by carding an 8-over-par 80 and currently stands tied for 84th place. Junior Julia Kraschinski, who missed the majority of her sophomore season with disc problems in her back, shot an opening round of 12-over-par 84 and stands tied for 114th place.

'It's been a long time since the Kraschinski sisters have played competitive golf,' Allen said. 'It will take time for them to get back into it. The more they play, the better they are going to get.'

Action at the NCAA Fall Preview continues Tuesday at Washington National Golf Course.
