Pac-10 Football Players of the Week (9/24/01)

Sept. 24, 2001

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Randy Fasani of Stanford, cornerback Steve Smith of Oregon and kick returner Roc Alexander of Washington have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.

Fasani, a senior from Granite Bay, Calif., led Stanford to a 51-28 win against Arizona State. Fasani completed 17 of 26 passes (.654) for 295 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. His touchdown passes went to four different receivers and covered 6, 32, 25 and 13 yards. Under Fasani's direction, the Stanford offense scored seven touchdowns, put up 548 yards total offense with a balanced 223 yards rushing and 325 yards passing, committed no turnovers and held a nine-minute time of possession advantage.

Smith, a senior from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., keyed Oregon's defense in the Ducks' 24-22 win against USC. Smith intercepted three passes, returning them 79 yards, including a 38-yard return for a touchdown. He also was credited with eight tackles, five solo, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and three additional passes broken up. His three interception performance is one shy of the Pac-10 single-game record. Smith is the second Oregon player to earn Pac-10 defensive player of the week honors, joining safety Keith Lewis, who was named after Oregon's victory against Wisconsin.

Alexander, a sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colo., scored a special teams touchdown for the second week in a row, this time on a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It was the first of three touchdowns by the Washington special teams in a seven-minute span as the Huskies followed up with scores on a blocked field goal attempt and a punt return. Alexander also intercepted a pass on defense.

Also nominated for offensive player of the week honors were quarterbacks Jason Gesser of Washington State, Cory Paus of UCLA, Carson Palmer of USC and Jason Johnson of Arizona. Also nominated on defense were safeties Billy Newman of Washington State and Marques Anderson of UCLA, linebacker Lance Briggs of Arizona and tackle Larry Tripplett of Washington. Kickers David Davis of USC and Mike Barth of Arizona State, return men Allan Amundson of Oregon and Brian Allen of Stanford and punter Alan Cox of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
