USC vs. No. 3 Arizona (Lyon Center)
Listen live on www.usctrojans.com.

The Facts
No. 5 USC women's volleyball (6-1, 1-0 Pac-10) swept two ranked opponents last week with a 3-0 win over 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday (Sept. 18) and a 3-0 win over eighth-ranked UCLA on Friday (Sept. 21). This week, the Women of Troy host Arizona State (5-4, 1-1 Pac-10) on Friday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m., and No. 3 Arizona (7-0, 2-0 Pac-10) on Saturday (Sept. 29) at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Lyon Center.

The Rankings
USC remained ranked No. 5 following wins over UCSB and UCLA. The Women of Troy are No. 5 in both polls - USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll and Volleyball Magazine. The Trojans earned a No. 4 final ranking in 2000 by both publications and opened the 2001 season at No. 2 and 4, respectively.

Recent Matches
vs. No. 8 UCLA
-- With an error-free performance by Alicia Robinson, USC beat eighth-ranked UCLA 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-12) in front of 1,386 at the Lyon Center on Sept. 21. Robinson led the Women of Troy with a match-high 14 kills off of 20 attacks and no errors. Her .700 attack percentage ranks ninth all-time among USC's individual match leaders. April Ross posted her second-straight double-double with 11 kills (.346) and a match-best 15 digs. At the net, Katie Olsovsky led both teams with six blocks in addition to a personal-best 11 digs. The Bruins were held to a .141 attack effort, 40 kills, 37 digs and only 3.0 blocks. Dominating on both offense and defense, USC managed to contain a team that normally averages 18.4 kills, 17.2 digs and 2.4 blocks per game.

vs. No. 18 UCSB -- With 12 kills and nine blocks, Katie Olsovsky led USC to a 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-15) win over 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 18. Olsovsky not only led the team in kills and blocks, but also hit .526 on the night (12-2-19) and committed only two hitting errors. Jennifer Pahl and Lauren Killian also provided near-perfect performances. Pahl hit .667 with six kills and no errors, while Killian contributed eight kills, one error and a .500 attack percentage. April Ross led with 13 digs, in addition to 10 kills. The Women of Troy held UCSB to a .044 attack percentage for the match. The Gauchos were unable to surpass .100 in a single game and were out-hit (54 to 34 kills), out-dug (63 to 48) and out-blocked (14.0 to 2.0).

Lexus Gauntlet Challenge
By capturing the first win in the home-and-home series with the Bruins, USC volleyball also earned the Trojans' first points in the recently announced Lexus Gauntlet Challenge between the two crosstown rivals. This unique program will award points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head contest throughout the year and the Lexus Gauntlet trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at year's end.

Defending The Title
USC and Arizona will be defending their right to repeat as Pac-10 Champions this season when the two teams face each other for the first time on Saturday (Sept. 29). Last season, USC and Arizona split the series and shared the Pac-10 Conference Championship.

A Scoring Leader?
This season's change to rally scoring has also introduced a new category of stats. Now every kill, block and ace will not only earn a team a point, but the responsible player gets a point as well (just as a basketball player contributes 20 points in a game). The formula is as follows:
points = kills + service aces + solo blocks + 1/2 block assists.
For example, April Ross leads the team with a total of 97.5 points this season (she has accumulated 86 kills, three aces, one block solo and 15 block assists). She averages 4.23 points per game and 13.93 points per match.

We've Got Options
It was just two years ago that the volleyball team only had nine healthy players on the roster. Now, the 2001 roster lists four outside hitters, four middle blockers and five defensive specialists. The depth allows USC to better match opponents, but it does sacrifice individual statistics. No one player has amassed more than 22 kills in a single match this season (April Ross vs. Wisconsin, 9/2). A group of players share the lead in nearly every category - four players are averaging more than 2.5 kills per game, four average more than 2.0 digs per outing and four average more than 1.0 blocks per game.

Can't Get Past Them
In seven matches, the Women of Troy have held opponents to a .130 attack percentage and only 1.6 blocks per game. All seven opponents (including four ranked opponents) have been held below .200 hitting with Wisconsin producing the highest attack percentage at .198. The Trojans have out-blocked the opponents by a 1.8 margin and are forcing 7.6 attack errors per game.

USC has won 20 consecutive home matches *** Alicia Robinson's hitting performance (14-0-20, .700) against the Bruins (Sept. 21) ranks ninth all-time among USC individual match leaders *** Katie Olsovsky collected a career-high nine blocks against UCSB (Sept. 18) and then surpassed a career high with 11 digs against UCLA (Sept. 21).

Haley Begins First Season
Mick Haley begins his first official season as head coach of the Women of Troy. Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He owns a 528-138-1 (.793) Division I career record and a 779-189-1 (.805) overall mark.

Volleyball Makes Move To Lyon Center
USC women's volleyball is making a move back to a familiar place. After playing the last five seasons in the North Gym, the Women of Troy are returning to the Lyon Center in order to accommodate more fans in a more comfortable atmosphere. Home to women's volleyball from 1988 through 1996, the Lyon Center hosted many of USC's top volleyball teams. The campus recreation center, opened June of 1989, includes a 20,000 square foot playing surface (including a new Sport Court) and seats 1,300 fans. It is located off of McClintock and can be accessed by entering campus through Gates 5 or 8 off of Jefferson Boulevard at Parking Structure B.

Fab Freshmen become Super Sophs
USC's Fab Freshmen of 2000 are looking to become Super Sophs of 2001! Last season, three of USC's six starters were first-year players (Toni Anderson, Katie Olsovsky, April Ross). Between the three of them, they led the team in kills, attacks, assists and service aces throughout the season. So far this season, sophomores lead the team in kills (April Ross, 3.74 kpg), assists (Toni Anderson, 8.29 apg), digs (Ross, 3.17 dpg) and aces (Nicole Davis, 0.30 sapg).

Freshman Class Ranked No. 1 (Again)
For the second year in a row, the USC women's volleyball program landed the nation's top recruiting class, according to Volleyball and Student Sports Magazine. The Women of Troy's 2001 recruiting class - which includes Emily Adams, Alicia Robinson, and Keao Burdine - will only add to the depth and talent that players such as April Ross (2000 AVCA second team All-American, Volleyball Freshman of the Year), Katie Olsovsky (Volleyball All-Freshman team) and Toni Anderson (Volleyball All-Freshman team) provided USC last season.

USC Takes Over U.S.A. Junior National Team
Sophomores Katie Olsovsky, April Ross and Toni Anderson and freshmen Alicia Robinson and Keao Burdine helped the U.S.A. Junior National Team qualify for the World Championships with a third place finish at the Intercontinental Qualification Tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, this summer. Of the six United States starters, four were Trojans.

The Adams-Robinson Duo
Freshmen Emily Adams and Alicia Robinson are the second coming of the famous Adams-Robinson duo. Their fathers, Alvan Adams and Truck Robinson, played together on the NBA's Phoenix Suns for three seasons. Despite attending different high schools, Emily and Alicia grew up in the same city (Phoenix, Ariz.), were club volleyball teammates through high school and even began playing softball together in elementary school.
